“I want to emblazon my community on my chest and show it off”, said Rob Geary, founder of the Welcome to East Van brand, in an interview I did with him last year. Geary was saying this in response to my asking him if his tshirt line had anything to do with the gentrification of the East side.  To him, the birth of this line was never meant to function as a commentary on the changing face of the area; it was, and continues to be, about celebrating the culture and community that always existed there.

So it’s only fitting that I was lead to today’s “Couldn’t Have Said it Better” article through him. Geary tweeted a link to  “East Van sheds its bad rep and emerges as Vancouver’s cultural heart” an article published in the Vancouver Sun, penned by  John Mackie, about how East Van is quickly gaining a reputation as a diverse centre for arts, entertainment and culture in Vancouver.
